Welcome to the site of the Tay River Legal Defence Fund.

This site provides information behindWater in the News the citizens' appeal against the permit requested by OMYA (Canada) in February 2000 to withdraw 4500 cubic metres of water per day from the Tay River in Eastern Ontario. This appeal process and related lobbying activities by the community finally resulted in a permit allowing a water taking of 1500 cubic metres per day until 2006 and a one year freeze by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment on further commercial water takings, pending a white paper by a Government Commission on water management in Ontario.

The intention is to provide the public with a factual documentary record of this appeal and the related proceedings of the Ontario Environmental Review Tribunal, and events arising from that Tribunal's decision.

On this site, you will find a history of the permit and its related problems, a description of the watershed, and some interesting information about it, and information on the Legal Defence Fund.

At this site you will find out About Us, learn for yourself the record of our defence activities to date and decide whether you want to take an active part in assisting us in continuing the legal fight for the preservation and conservation of the Tay River Watershed through parliamentary, legal and other processes.

This site is presented by The Tay River Legal Defence Fund - a voluntary support organization set up to help defray the expenses of citizens committed to undertaking such action.
